Restaurant Menu Design

Working Knowledge of Graphic Design Software and Digital Tools:

I worked extensively with Photoshop and InDesign to create a series of designs for this fictional Chinese restaurant. Using Photoshop, I removed the backgrounds from the pixel-based images I chose to help align them with the brand’s visual identity. Meanwhile, InDesign tools were instrumental in arranging the visual elements and typesetting to ensure the layout remained balanced and harmonious. I aim to ensure clear information and a cohesive visual appeal to captivate the target audience. The final visuals showcase my proficiency in selecting the most suitable software for specific tasks.

Elements of Design:

In planning the layout of this series, I carefully considered the target audience, with the goal of enhancing functionality while preserving the design’s integrity. To accomplish this, I increased white space, employed hierarchy and scale, and ensured a strong contrast between the background and text colors. Given the series’ relaxed vibe, I opted for a less dynamic layout structure while maintaining interest through minimal repetition and highlighting important visual elements.

Creative Self-Expression and Originality:

Following the design brief, I searched for inspiration from various Chinese restaurant brand identities online. I took note of the images they used, how they arranged visual elements for easy understanding, the key elements for an attractive menu, and how each business expressed Chinese culture. Afterward, I sketched the first draft and then utilized the class resources that pointed us to where to download free images while ensuring that we gave credit to the artists. The final design reflects the time I dedicated to understanding Chinese cuisine and ensuring my design was respectful of their culture. It also shows how I assembled my research findings with my knowledge of basic design to produce a realistic menu design.

Evidence of Thoughtful and Appropriate Critique Skills:

The project’s course of origin made us choose between two fictional businesses to concentrate on. When giving feedback to my classmates then, I kept in mind that each design brief required different solutions. This approach helped me to stay impartial and provide thoughtful advice. Likewise, the feedback I received on the text format and background images prompted me to explore design variations that enhance the effectiveness of my design.

Evidence of Following Directions:

All the required marketing pieces, including the brochure, table tent, and two-spread menu, were designed using the correct design elements and principles. Throughout the project’s origin, I examined the relevance of my classmates’ and professors’ input based on the design brief and the solutions I had made during the brainstorming phase. Subsequently, I made necessary adjustments to ensure the tone and style remained consistent with my desired outcome.

Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail:

This project’s course of origin mainly focused on the use of InDesign. As such, I paid close attention to the text’s readability and the arrangement of visual elements like images and shapes. I ensured the photos of the foods I used looked professional and contributed to the overall mood. Additionally, I double-checked that the final documents were properly set up for printing by linking files, adjusting the color mode, and setting up the marks and bleed.
