Typographic Portrait

Working Knowledge of Graphic Design Software and Digital Tools:

Through the creation of this typographic portrait, I have demonstrated my proficiency in Photoshop and Illustrator. In Photoshop, I used various tools to produce a clean reference image, and in Illustrator, I arranged words into a unique pattern. By effectively utilizing these tools, I replicated the subject’s facial structure using typefaces and words that reflect his achievements.

Elements of Design:

I used contrast in font size and color, as well as shapes formed by blocks of text and white space, to emphasize the important areas of this portrait. Additionally, I arranged the elements asymmetrically to capture more of the subject’s essence and create a sense of motion. I also paid attention to the correct scale of information to enhance his facial features, ultimately creating interesting textures.

Creative Self-Expression and Originality:

I decided to take a more traditional approach by using only black in this typographic portrait rather than the vibrant colors that are typically used. I also chose the classic font Didot because it conveys a sense of maturity and commands great respect. For my next revision, I’m thinking of doing the opposite and focusing more on the subject’s body of work, allowing me to experiment with fun visual elements.

Evidence of Thoughtful and Appropriate Critique Skills:

I carefully considered the initial feedback and made adjustments to ensure a more realistic portrayal of the subject. Using Illustrator, I rearranged the text and adjusted the hue levels in relation to the original image. This helped to improve the subject’s features and the overall legibility of the letterforms. In turn, I provided specific feedback to my peers tailored to their individual design approaches.

Evidence of Following Directions:

The typographic portrait of Hayao Miyazaki turned out really well using the chosen typeface. The key to the project’s success was understanding the instructions thoroughly before creating a design plan. The clear guidelines helped me develop a method for creating legible letterforms while effectively representing the subject. Additionally, the guidelines made it easy to decide which tools to use when editing the original image and arranging the words around the structure.

Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail:

Adhering to the guidelines, I incorporated hierarchy and contrast to convey the mood and tone of the portrait using various font styles. I focused on ensuring legibility and worked hard to capture the subject’s personality and imagery by carefully manipulating the letters to enhance the composition’s overall structure. I also paid attention to the arrangement of words and their relationship with other visual elements to effectively communicate my original design concept.
