Didot: Homage to a Typeface

Working Knowledge of Graphic Design Software and Digital Tools:

The completed piece demonstrates my proficiency in utilizing Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. Initially implementing Photoshop techniques, I enhanced all the necessary elements and seamlessly integrated them into a visually captivating poster within InDesign. The outcome is a refined composition with sharp visual elements, accomplished by employing various effects and techniques throughout the design phase.

Elements of Design:

For this project, I chose a traditional style to align with the historical context of the subjects. Drawing from various skills acquired in previous classes, I carefully selected a rich, emotive color palette to complement the layout. The visual elements will help create interest and control the audience’s eye movement throughout the composition. The design effectively conveys information using paragraph and character tools in InDesign to customize the fonts and emphasize crucial details, complementing the chosen colors seamlessly. By combining design principles with technical tools, this poster effectively highlights all essential information required by the assignment.

Creative Self-Expression and Originality:

I aimed to captivate the target audience by effectively integrating visual elements into this project. My process started with thorough research into the subject’s history, its creators, and the typeface’s anatomy to ensure the accuracy of the conveyed information. I then sought inspiration from the typographer’s body of work to influence the poster’s style. After that, I started sketching my ideas and collecting visual elements simultaneously. Finally, I polished the draft using software suitable for this project.

Evidence of Thoughtful and Appropriate Critique Skills:

I’ve received feedback on the project, and most of it is positive, mentioning how all design components work effectively. Even though I didn’t get any other critiques, I still went back to ensure all were properly arranged after I deleted a part I didn’t want in the final presentation. I realigned the title, text, and visual graphic, demonstrating the font’s anatomy and ensuring the overall layout matched my original design concept and project guidelines.

Evidence of Following Directions:

Using the assignment prompt from the course origin as a guide helped me create a unique and effective design. I incorporated all the criteria by selecting a landscape layout and integrating design elements and principles such as hierarchy, balance, color, and contrast. The goal was to captivate the audience with a sophisticated style, and I believe the design successfully achieved that.

Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail:

After revising the previous design for my portfolio, I carefully evaluated all the visual elements in the layout. It’s crucial to ensure that the alignment, colors, and file formats of the heading, body text, and visual cues align with my original vision for the poster. Additionally, I assessed the effectiveness of the typography, paying special attention to kerning, leading, and tracking. I also verified that the images were correctly linked to the document folder and made adjustments to enhance the overall appearance by fine-tuning some effects in preparation for printing.
