Working Knowledge of Graphic Design Software and Digital Tools:
This project demonstrates my proficiency in using a drawing tablet with Adobe Illustrator. I’ve decided to work with a tablet because the logo features a character created in a semi-realistic style. I believe it would be more efficient than using a mouse with Illustrator’s brush and pen tools to achieve smooth lines. While Photoshop can offer more effects to achieve this style, I chose Illustrator because logos are typically used in various sizes, and using Illustrator for this project will help maintain its resolution and quality.
Elements of Design:
The logo incorporates various design elements and principles to properly represent the brand’s identity. The circular frame and color scheme unite all the elements, including the text, logo, and mascot, creating a sense of balance and harmony. Additionally, I leveraged the weight of the mascot outline and the fonts to command attention and establish hierarchy within the design.
Creative Self-Expression and Originality:
I took inspiration for the overall theme and style of this project from actual coffee and tea shops. Studying these businesses gave me valuable ideas for the design brief. Once I finalized the design brief, I searched the internet for a specific style that would fit my design concept. I also delved into vintage book covers and illustrations to learn how they use design principles to evoke particular moods. After that, I started sketching the logo before moving on to Illustrator to refine the lines and further develop my concept.
Evidence of Thoughtful and Appropriate Critique Skills:
I incorporated the feedback for this project, focusing on the figure’s stroke lines and font styles. The revision maintains the expressive nature of these elements while ensuring consistency. I adjusted the kerning and tracking of the texts and logo and converted the outlines into shapes to avoid printing issues.
Evidence of Following Directions:
As this is a personal project, I’ve established a set of guidelines to guide me through the design process. I drew inspiration from previous guidelines but tweaked them to suit the design requirements better. This involves brainstorming ideas, researching businesses and target audiences, gathering design elements, and selecting the appropriate software.
Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail:
The final design showcases my skill in generating ideas and integrating various elements to form a unified structure that resonates with a specific audience. Its overall appearance also confirms my ability to emulate styles and develop a fresh design that conveys a distinct message from its inspirations.
